The art of making sweets has continued in the castle town of Himeji since the Edo period (1603-1868).
Blessed with high quality water and sake rice, Himeji is also home to eight breweries producing unique local sake.
Other local products include its famous white leatherworks ("Himeji leartherworks"), and foods including sweets, sake, somen noodles, dried noodles, sand eel kugini, grilled conger eel, various yuzu citrus products, and more.
Himeji's traditional crafts are varied, and include Myochin Honpo (Wind Chimes), ibushiki roof tiles, Himeji kokeshi dolls and other traditional dolls, Shosha lacquerware, Himeji tops, matches, and so on.
