The 60-hectare forest adjacent to the Sakurayama Reservoir has an 8-km observation trail where visitors can observe local wild birds, plants, and insects.
As soon as you enter the Nature Center, you will see an information board with details on the highlights of the forest, so be sure to check here first! If you have any questions, please ask the rangers at the reception desk.
The panel exhibit "Forest Animals Captured by Automatic Camera" and the "Birds of the Month" exhibit work in cooperation with the Himeji Science Museum to introduce the animals and birds that live in the forest every month. There is an aquarium displaying fish from the Otsumo River that flows nearby, a case for Himeji's city butterfly, the Chinese windmill butterfly, and an exhibit where visitors can touch the fallen feathers and nests of creatures from the forest, as well as a picture book corner with tatami mats, often crowded with small children. On the veranda, growing tadpoles are displayed during the spring.
The exhibition room features stuffed specimens, wild bird feathers, nests, and eggs. There is also a corner where visitors can learn how creatures of the forest live. For those who wish to learn more about nature, the library has a collection of more than 800 illustrated books and nature-related books, as well as more specialized information on wild birds and nature conservation. Take an illustrated map (free of charge) with you when you go for a walk in the forest. You may also want to bring binoculars (free to borrow). There are observation huts, pavilions, and benches along the observation paths where you can eat your lunch.
On many holidays, rangers hold guided walks and Parent-Child Forest Activities (application required), which you can join on the day of your visit. Forest seminars (application required) led by lecturers provide an in-depth look at nature.
There are also many mini events held by the "Kikimimi Zukin" forest volunteers once to twice a month to familiarize visitors with the forest, like weekday guided walks and picture book reading.
