Seaside & IslandsHistoryIeshima Shrine
It is said that Japan's first emperor, Jimmu, prayed at this shrine before his accession to the throne. In the Heian period (794-1185), the scholar, poet, and politician Sugawara no Michizane also visited this shrine on his way to Dazaifu in Kyushu, following his demotion from his aristocratic rank. The place where is said to have landed, near Ieshima Shrine, is known as "Shi-wo-Shojo." According to the "Shoku Nihon Koki," the fourth of Japan's major history texts, the shrine was listed as a government shrine in 840.
